1. Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum

2. Structure
The SER’s structure is stated in its name. It is smooth, containg no “bumps” from ribosome's.
They are more commonly found instead of rough E.R. in areas such as the brain and intestine.

3. Function
There are many types of functions for the smooth endoplasmic reticulum. They are found in many types of cells also. There are tubules that branch from each other and form a network. Since it does not have ribosome's like the rough endoplasmic reticulum , it allows more surface area. The surface area is needed for the storage of key enzymes.
In muscle cells the smooth E.R. is used for calcium. It also detoxifies some toxic chemicals . This occurs in the liver.
The SER is most well known as a storage organelle. It is important in the creation of steroids.

4. Diseases
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum malfunctions are associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Tissue dies in the brain and message can’t be sent through out the body. Since SER is found abundantly in the brain the stops the function of it. Alzheimer’s is also know to affect memory, thinking, and behavior. It is known to be hereditary or just to come with old age.
