The extent of frost damage depends on the length of exposure to freezing weather. Periods of only a few hours are not likely to damage most plants. Early evening temperatures in the low 40s may indicate longer periods of sub-freezing temperatures.

32 Succulent Survival Tips for Freezing Weather Courtesy of LACSS
Cold + wet = bad combination. When plant cells are turgid (stiff and filled with water), they may expand and burst upon freezing. Hold back on watering in the winter.

33 Succulent Survival Tips for Freezing Weather Courtesy of LACSS
Move sensitive, potted plants under eaves, close to buildings, or inside where it’s dry and slightly warmer.

Drape frost cloth (from nurseries) or white or colored sheets over plants that are at risk of freezing. Avoid plastic sheeting as it is not porous and traps the cold and moisture. Remove the cloth as soon as the weather warms.

Christmas lights (even tiny LED bulbs) can be intertwined among your plants to generate a little additional heat, especially before covering.

36 Succulent Survival Tips for Freezing Weather Courtesy of LACSS
If possible, keep air moving around plants, as cold air tends to settle around the plants. Commercial growers actually use fans to ensure this.

37 Succulent Survival Tips for Freezing Weather Courtesy of LACSS
Resist the urge to groom your plants, especially after they’ve been damaged by frost. Dry, unsightly leaves protect the plant from further damage. Remove leaves only if they stay moist and begin to decay.

38 Succulent Survival Tips for Freezing Weather Courtesy of LACSS
Caudiciform plants may lose leaves, but can tolerate most cold. Frozen tips will result in branching. Leafy, tropical-looking succulents are probably frost sensitive. Check on line for the habits of specific plants.

39 Succulent Survival Tips for Freezing Weather Courtesy of LACSS
Some vulnerable plants tend to be sanseverias, plumerias, adenias, adeniums, pachypodiums (other than lamerei and gaeyi), some kalanchoes, euphorbias from Madagascar.

40 Succulent Survival Tips for Freezing Weather Courtesy of LACSS
Most agaves, cacti, aloes, and winter growers are not particularly vulnerable to the cold.

41 Succulent Survival Tips for Freezing Weather Courtesy of LACSS
Most plants are very resilient. Don’t be discouraged if you lose or damage a few plants, as even the experts learn most from mistakes. Good luck!
