2 Presidential Election of 1808

3 James Madison Becomes President

4 The Non-Intercourse Act (1809)
Replaced the Embargo Act. Remained U. S. policy until 1812. Unexpected Consequences: N. Eng. was forced to become self-sufficient again [old factories reopened]. Laid the groundwork for US industrial power. Jefferson, a critic of an industrial America, ironically contributed to Hamilton’s view of the US!!!

5 British Instigation of Indians British General Meets with Tecumseh

6 “War Hawks” John C. Calhoun [SC] Henry Clay [KY]

7 American Problems The US was unprepared militarily:
Had a 12-ship navy vs. Britain’s 800 ships. Americans disliked a draft  preferred to enlist in the disorganized state militias. Financially unprepared: Flood of paper $. Revenue from import tariffs declined. Regional disagreements.

22 The American System WEST  got roads, canals, and federal aid.
EAST  got the backing of protective tariffs from the West. SOUTH  ??

23 The Panic of 1819 CAUSES???

24 The Tallmadge Amendment
No new slaves in Missouri and all slaves born in Missouri after the territory became a state would be freed at the age of 25. Passed by the House, not in the Senate. The North controlled the House, and the South had enough power to block it in the Senate.

25 The Compromise of 1820:

26 Missouri Compromise It keeps the balance, but . . . Simply a band aid?
What did it truly solve? Was there a better solution? Precursor to Civil War, or deserving of praise?

27 The Monroe Doctrine, 1823 Referred to as America’s Self-Defense Doctrine. What warning is given to the European countries? What foreign policy principles are established? Monroe Doctrine What would the US do if the warning was not headed?
