Neutrality Neutrality Proclamation of Set up American isolationism. Urged non-involvement. Neutrality Acts- Wilson declared that the U.S. would remain neutral in the war in Europe.

Monroe Doctrine Issued by James Monroe in called for noncolonization and nonintervention from Europeans in the Western Hemisphere. Roosevelt Corollary- Fearing European’s in the west, Theodore Roosevelt declared the United States responsible for all intervention in Latin Affairs, as policemen of the west. Led to “Bullying Big Brother” era.

Manifest Destiny Manifest Destiny- The belief that God intended for Americans control all of the northwestern hemisphere. Major territorial acquisitions - Louisiana Purchase (1803), Florida(1819), Texas (1845), Oregon (1846), Mexican Cession (1848), Gadsden Purchase (1853).

Roosevelt’s Big Stick When Roosevelt wanted something, he would do whatever necessary to get it. Panama- wanting to build the Panama Canal, Roosevelt staged a revolution in Columbia, aiding the rebels, who then allowed him to build the canal. Roosevelt bullied the Caribbean, promoting the “Bullying Big Brother” and “Bad Neighbor” views of America.

Imperialism There was an imperialist race in the late 19th century.
Formal imperialism (the United States was politically or militarily at the nation) - Hawaii, Guam, Puerto Rico Informal imperialism (the United States indirectly dominated the nation) - China (Open Door)

Containment After WW2, America entered a harsh standoff with the Soviet Union. America adopted a policy of containing communism, intervening where necessary to maintain democracy. Used in Vietnam, Korea, and other eastern European, and Asian nations

Truman Doctrine Part of the policy of Containment, Truman asked for $400 million to aid Greece and Turkey. More generally, he declared that the U.S. would aid free peoples attempting to avoid subjugation of communists.

North Atlantic Treaty Organization
In 1949, the United States joined NATO, a European pact declaring that an attack on one was an attack on all. Marked a huge boost for European unification Was a significant step in the militarization of the Cold War.

North American Free Trade Agreement
Created in 1993, NAFTA was a free-trade zone encompassing Mexico, Canada, and the United States. This continued the prosperity of the United States in the 1990’s
