Objectives n Students will learn about different members of the community n Students will learn what different members of our community do to help us n Students will learn what different members of our community do to help our community function

Possible Community Helpers: n Park District Employee –Provides activities at the local parks –Keeps are parks clean –Educational programming n City Worker –Snow plow driver –Leaf picker upper –Fixes our streets –Maintains traffic lights –Keeps our city beautiful

Possible Community Helpers: n Librarian: –Educational programming –Helps students find books –Keeps the library in order n Principal –Runs the school –Plans school events –Works with parents –Works with the community –Works with teachers –Works with students

Possible Community Helpers: n Police Officer –Keeps us safe –Fights Crime –Teaches crime prevention n Fire Fighter –Fights fires –Teaches fire prevention –Performs first aid –Responds to accidents

Possible Community Helpers: n Mail Carrier –Collects the mail –Sorts the mail –Delivers the mail n Baker –Makes bread, cookies, cakes, and other desserts

Possible Community Helpers: n Doctor –Helps you feel better when youre sick n Dentist –Helps keep your teeth clean –Teaches us how to keep our teeth healthy and clean

Trip to the Fire Station n Take a field trip to the local fire station n If possible, make this a walking field trip n Make Fire Truck Snacks as a thank you

Trip to the Police Station n Take a trip to the local police station n Materials –Permission Slips –Parent Volunteer(s) to help supervise –Transportation

Trip to Local Library n Take a trip to the local library. –Have the Librarian talk about their job –Show the students around the library n Materials: –Permission Slips –Parent Volunteer(s) to help supervise –Transportation

Principal Interview Principal Interview n Have the Principal come in for a student led interview n Materials: –Student generated questions –Schedule the interview with the principal

Visit from the Bus Driver n Invite a school bus driver to come to the school and talk with the students –Discuss bus safety –Practice a bus evacuation –Show the students around the bus (i.e.: the area around the driver seat)

Visit from a Baker n Have a local baker come in a speak with the class n Make cookies together n Materials: –Schedule a visit –Cookie supplies –Student generated questions

Visit from Serviceman/woman n Invite several servicemen/women from different branches to come in and speak with the class. –Try to find relatives of your students n Materials: –Schedule a visit –Student generated questions
