1
Realized Eschatology Implications of teachings
2
The Allegory of Galatians 4:21-31
Two women are TWO COVENANTS (V. 24) Mt. Sinai – bearing children unto bondage (Hagar - handmaid) Jerusalem above – free – children of promise (Sarah – freewoman) “Isaac’s adoption into a position of full inheritance” didn’t take place until Ishmael was cast out????
3
The Allegory of Galatians 4:21-31
Period of overlapping??? – Ishmael never heir of promise Not an encouragement to hold on till inheritance is yours, but stop trying to live by Old Testament Law (Gal. 4:21) Christians were already in position of sole heirs – not needing to hold on till Judaism cast out in A.D. 70 (Gal. 3:26-29, 4:4-7, 5:1, Col. 1:13)
4
Implications of overlapping covenants
Spiritual Adultery (Rom. 7:1-3) Adulteress if joined to another while husband liveth Death has occurred – freeing one to be joined to Christ who was raised from the dead Jesus’ death brought end of law, not A. D. 70 (Colossians 2:14)
5
Bodily resurrection context of I Corinthians 15
Jesus as “firstfruits” promise of resurrection – He was raised bodily, not figurative (v.23) With what manner of “body” do they come when raised (v. 35, 38) Sown natural body – raised spiritual body (v ) That which is dead is raised – was the church dead in its beginning? (v.16)
6
Paul identifies with Pharisees regarding resurrection… (Acts 23:6-8, 24:15)
Did Pharisees believe that in destruction of Jerusalem the Old Testament saints will have their spirits revived and join spiritual Israel? Paul believed all raised unto judgment – just and unjust (cf.Jn. 5:28-29)
7
Some implications of Realized Eschatological doctrine…
What about the destruction of Jerusalem frightened the Roman procurator Pilate (Acts 24:25)? Why is marriage still occurring (Lk. 20:35)? Why are people still dying (Lk. 20:35)? Why are you still partaking of the Lord’s Supper ( I Cor. 11:26) Love not the “Jewish Age” (I Jn.2:15-17)
8
Some implications of Realized Eschatological doctrine…
Present day Hymenaeus and Philetus – resurrection is past already (2 Tim. 2:17-18) Was Paul an Old Testament Saint- he saw himself as possibly among the dead (I Thess. 5:10)?
