The Importance of Verbal Communication Many different types of communication exist in our personal lives and our professional lives. Many people talk to each other but communication may not actually be taking place. Communication is a process which will be discussed in detail in this presentation.

4 What is Communication? According to communication is defined as “the imparting or interchange of thoughts, opinions, or information by speech, writing, or signs”. Communication must involve an exchange between two or more people. It is a two-way dialogue as opposed to a mere delivery of information. Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved

5 Types of Communication
Many different theories exist regarding the different types of communication but generally there are three types of communication: Verbal – communication using words, includes oral and written Nonverbal – communication using gestures and facial expressions Visual – communication using visuals such as charts, graphs or pictures Although many people consider communication as talking, there is much more to it. It can be broken down into verbal, nonverbal, and visual. These types apply to many different people regarding many different types of information. 6 Communication Process
Sender-the one who is sending the information Receiver-the intended target or audience of the message Channel-the medium by which the message is sent Message-the information to be transmitted Feedback-an evaluation or response to the sent message For communication to have taken place, it must go through a process consisting of several steps. Otherwise, the information may be out there, but it may not be the right information for the intended audience, or it may not have been relayed through the right channels. 7 Channels of Communication
Meetings which are face-to-face s within departments Internal Sales brochures Press releases External Channels of communication are sometimes not as easy to understand. These are how the message is delivered. There is typically internal and external communication in every exchange. 8 Verbal Communication According to verbal communication means “of or pertaining to words”, whether: Oral or Written Oral communication involves speaking and is conducted in a ‘real time’ manner Written communication also includes printed documents and can be viewed any time. Because “verbal” refers to words, verbal communication consists of oral and written communication although many people consider verbal as oral. 9 Nonverbal Communication
Includes: Gestures Facial expressions Dress Nonverbal communication is especially important today as a result of our emerging global economy and workplace. 10 Visual Communication This type of communication includes visuals such as: Charts Graphs In business particularly, visual communication is very important. Due to the nature of our fast-paced society today, people would rather receive their information in as brief a form as possible. 11 Effective Communication
The most effective communication includes a combination of one or more of the previous communication types. Each type alone leads to a distortion of the intended message. The measure of how effective the communication is in how well the sender’s message was received by the audience. This is done through feedback. Measuring the effectiveness of communication is best done through feedback. 12 Assignments Corporate Message Assignment #1 - Students should each think of 3 commercials for products or services . They will report on what the message is and how verbal (oral and written), nonverbal, and visual communication is used to promote the product or service. Communication Process Assignment #2 - Students will create a particular message they would like to convey and use software such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Inspiration, or Visio to create a flowchart demonstrating the Communication Process.
