WARM/STRICT Todd Hawks, Presenter August 4, 2014
2
OBJECTIVES Participants will understand the differences between warm and strict Participants will learn how warm and strict coexist Participants will learn techniques to create a positive and strong presence in their classroom Participants will learn ways to incorporate Warm/Strict in their classrooms
3
DEFINE IT WARM STRICT Positive, enthusiastic, caring, and thoughtful
Clear, consistent, firm, and unrelenting
4
KEY UNDERSTANDINGS Not opposites Seek to be both Simultaneously
Warm and strict are not opposites. Although many of us are socialized to think otherwise, you can and should seek to be both at the exact same time. When you are simultaneously clear, consistent, firm, and unrelenting and positive, enthusiastic, caring, and thoughtful, you send the powerful message that having high expectations is part of caring for and respecting someone.
5
MAKING WARM/STRICT EFFECTIVE
Explain to students why you’re doing what you’re doing Distinguish between behavior and people Demonstrate that consequences are temporary Use warm nonverbal behavior Temporary consequences: Get over it quickly yourself
6
EXPLAIN Why you are doing what you are doing Be genuine
How it will help them Be genuine Don’t make explanations superficial That’s what they do in college School is the real world Far removed from explanation “Sweetheart, we don’t do that in this classroom because it keeps us from making the most of our learning time. I’m going to have to try to help you remember that.”
7
DISTINGUISH Distinguish between behavior and people Example:
Your inconsiderate Your behavior is inconsiderate
8
CONSEQUENCES ARE TEMPORARY
After consequence your next task is to forgive Don’t hold a grudge Get over it quickly Model that once consequence is fulfilled, it is in the past Be sincere The slate is clean You use a consequence so you won’t have to hold a grudge Be sincere in your smiling and greeting Show that the slate is clean
9
USE WARM NONVERBAL BEHAVIOR
Arm on shoulder Facial expression Convey sympathy Get on their eye level Don’t apologize about expectations Sympathy-have to redo the work, but you know they can do better Explain they won’t be allowed to talk to classmates that way…but don’t apologize because you care. WARM/STRICT: APOLOGY: “Because I care about you, you must serve the consequence for being late.” “I care about you, but you still must serve the consequence for being late.”
10
COMPOSE WARM/STRICT Choose at Least 3 Practice
11
HOW YOU COME ACROSS Warm Strict Warm and strict by turns Warm/Strict
Which are you?
12
