1 Integrating GIS & IM Systems
Acreage Analysis & Ranking at Enterprise Oil Gareth Smith (Exprodat Ltd) Adrian Birch (Enterprise Oil plc) Mark Sawyers (Enterprise Oil plc) 2001 ESRI Petroleum User Group

2 Enterprise’s Business
The North Sea is a core Enterprise area over 130 blocks 20 fields, producing over 150,000 boepd Enterprise look to actively manage NS portfolio North Sea Regional Team (NSRT) set up to support this process and identify new opportunities Need to leverage all available information / knowledge sources when analysing opportunities

3 NSRT: Business Drivers
Reduced discovery size and higher risk means that optimal portfolio management is key to business success in the North Sea Licence trading activity increasing as companies divest and rationalise portfolios $10 billion of assets traded in 2000 4.8 billion boe equivalent traded in 2000 (double ‘99) Web-based asset trading initiatives making it easier to trade / sell assets ~ 120* opportunities currently available for trade on LIFT (UK licence trading site) * Excludes private opportunities

4 Recent Deals (April-November 2000)

5 NSRT: Goals Rapid review of exploration opportunities
screening platform for detailed work Exploration block and portfolio ranking instantaneous pursue/monitor/avoid listings have an opinion on every block in the CNS Continual development and refinement no more repeated work capture knowledge from previous studies Target resources on the best opportunities Find hydrocarbons that others have missed

6 Enterprise’s IM Systems
Enterprise have established a leading edge IM system: the Exploration & Production Data Management System (EPDS) Uses Landmark’s OpenExplorer technology at its core Integrates over 25 different information sources for the UKCS physical integration of structured data ‘virtual’ integration of unstructured, spatial and external data sources using Web and GIS The challenge: leveraging EPDS to support the NSRT’s business objectives

7 EPDS Architecture Model
Subsurface Portal: RAPID / ArcIMS The User Environment Integrated Software Suite & GIS Project/Apps DBs Regional OE 3rd Party DB’s Digital Data Shared Knowledge Project Documenter OpenJournal Knowledge Reference System Lessons Learnt Purchased Data Sets Trade/Partner Data Log/Seismic/ Production etc Web & Intranet Operational/Archive DB’s Spatial Data

8 Solution: Acreage Analysis System
Development of the DART system Spatial and structured data extraction from EPDS using custom ArcView GIS routines Data manipulation and analysis using MS Access Data presentation thorough GIS and MS Office tools Knowledge capture through Access application and external project documentation tools (OpenJournal, Project Documenter)

9 DART: General Architecture
2 Transfer to Access 1 Extract Data in GIS 3 Analyse & Report 4 Link to EPDS EPDS

10 Step 1: GIS Data Integration / Extraction
Custom Avenue application developed to set up data extraction process User selects data for extraction / transfer to data analysis application Designed to be as generic as possible accesses data from standard OpenWorks data structures where possible user controlled data classification set-up goal: use in all of Enterprise’s offices worldwide Data extraction process time typically 2-3 hrs for CNS size area (~ 800 blocks)

11 Help!

12 EPDS ‘Structured’ Data Sources
Description Arthur Andersen Well, lease, field, facilities, pipelines Asset Geoscience (Target) Hydrocarbon shows, untested HC columns, test information, basin stats RRI Tests, shows, well picks, CPI DTI, LIFT, UKOOA Licence rentals, fallow block lists, available acreage, released seismic data availability Prospect Inventory (in-house) Prospect information

13 EPDS Spatial Data Sets General ‘culture’ data
wells, fields, leases, pipelines, facilities, water depth etc. Regional surface / isochore maps constructed from in-house data, RRI picks and other regional data sets using Zmap+ imported into ESRI GRID format direct from Zmap+ Play maps reservoir distribution maps for all major stratigraphic levels at a regional scale maturity / migration maps Attribute analysis (e.g. amplitude)

14 Regional Structure / Isopach Maps

15 Regional Play Maps Maureen Formation Lista Formation Sele Formation
Balder Formation

16 General Culture / Facilities

17 GIS Data Extraction

18 GIS: Standard Data Definitions

19 Step 2:Access Data Manipulation / Analysis
Custom Microsoft Access application developed to ‘condition’ data imported from GIS routines User controls individual data type ‘scoring’ rules Analysis models can be stored and recalled Sums individual attributes to provide a total score for each block calibrate against prospect inventory and well known acreage Blocks can be reported in several ways (e.g. by company, portfolio, score) Additional metadata can be captured against a block External information can be linked to a block (e.g. block review document, link to Rapid web portal)

20 Ranking Factors

21 Licence Information Review

22 Detailed Analysis & Knowledge Capture

23 Link to RAPID

24 Step 3: Data Analysis Results easily exported for review in Excel or GIS A number of pre-defined reports provided Plan to produce a ‘live’ link from GIS to Access database

25 Access Reports

26 Net Yet To Find (Fields > 10 MMB)

27 Portfolio Comparison - All Blocks

28 Spatial Display of Results
Slides removed for handout: Summed ranking Play ranking LIFT ranking Portfolio ranking

29 Business Benefits Acreage ranking and analysis process reduced from months to hours Allows Enterprise to be fully pro-active in opportunity assessment and asset management Prospect portfolio can be calibrated against a regional model Knowledge is captured and time is saved in future evaluations Allows Enterprise to leverage investment in information assets

30 What Next? Roll-out to all regional offices Expand data coverage
economics and risk prospect information Tighter GIS / Access application integration Deliver results through ArcIMS Tighter integration with portal and knowledge capture tools Apply methodology to other ‘assets’ fields prospects
