What is MLA? MLA (Modern Language Association) style formatting is often used in various Humanities disciplines. MLA regulates: Document Format In-text citations Works Cited (a list of all sources used in the paper)

What is an annotated bibliography?
An annotated bibliography is a list of sources (books, journals, websites, periodicals, etc.) one has used for researching a topic that includes a summary and evaluation of each of the sources.
4
Purpose of an Annotated Bibliography
The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited.
5
Excellent Preparation
When you have to write annotations for each source, you are forced to read each source carefully. You begin to read more critically instead of just collecting information.
6
Double space and use the hanging indent.
Format of the citation MLA style Double space and use the hanging indent.
7
Format of the annotation
Use the third person – do not use “I..” Use the literary present tense. Examples: “This article discusses…” “In this article the author supports…” “This book gives a detailed view on…” “This article describes…”

Beginning Steps 1. Cite and summarize your resource using the MLA Handbook or refer to your English folders. Make sure to capitalize titles and names and enter information correctly. It will not correct errors. 2. Alphabetize your sources by first letter in each citation. 3. Create your paper using MLA format 4. Answer all six questions for each citations
9
Ethos: The Credibility of the Source
Credibility or ethos: The author and publication’s credibility How much do you trust the source? What credentials or experience does the source have regarding this issue? Is the figure well-known? Is there any reason you should not trust the author or publication?
10
Pathos: Emotional Appeal
Does the author use emotional reasoning? If so, what emotions does he/she rely on? Does the author responsibly use emotional appeals or does the writer try to overly rely on them?
11
Logos: The Logical Evidence
Part of evaluating logic involves analyzing the reasoning of an argument Logos provides an overall framework of which ethos and pathos are a part Although logos may not inspire people as much as ethos and pathos it often keeps people from acting rashly or foolishly
12
6 Questions to Answer: Is the source credible? What makes it credible or not (i.e. publisher, author’s credibility, references, etc...)? What is the main idea of the source? What is the author’s purpose? Who is the intended audience (single mother, teenagers, educated women, etc…)? Why are these people the intended audience? Is their bias in the source? Does the author present both sides of an argument when necessary? Is the source effective? Why or why not? What literary techniques were used to add to the effectiveness of the source (i.e. syntax, author’s tone, rhetorical appeals used, etc…) Failure to answer all six questions thoroughly will result in deduction of points. Each question should have a thorough answer.

He targets a wide audience of mothers, teachers, and teenagers so that they can learn about this important issue. The author focuses mainly on the causes of teen pregnancy and he believes that it is mainly due to poverty. He does not give other reasons and causes which leaves the source to be biased.
