Conservation of Angular Momentum
12/7/2018 Experiment 6 Conservation of Angular Momentum
3
Safety! Do not stand on rotating platform
& watch your fingers with the bicycle wheel Conservation of angular momentum Torque (analogous to F=ma for linear motion) Moment of Inertia- (analogous to mass) Rotational Kinetic Energy
4
Part 1. Angular Momentum under Changing I
Part 1 : Angular Momentum & Rotational KE Initial I large, final I small …which w is larger?
5
Part 2. Conservation of L in a Rotating System
Look at the direction the wheel is spinning … which way will you spin when you flip it over? What is the final L of you and the platform? What is the final L of the wheel? Can you spin in the other direction? How?
6
Part 3. Conservation of L in Collision
Measure angular velocity of the rotating system before collision: 2. Measure angular velocity of the rotating system after collision. Is Angular Momentum conserved? Is Rotational Kinetic Energy conserved? T a To find out you’ll also need to measure the moment of inertias before and after the collision. Accelerate the before and after configurations and solve for the moment of inertias. mw T a
