1 Document F An account of Becket’s Murder from a school textbook
The Knights came into the Church in full armour, with swords and axes. The monks told the archbishop to flee into the Church, where they thought he would be safe. Becket refused. The monks pushed him into the Church anyway and the Knights followed him inside. The Archbishop ordered that the doors of the Church should be kept open. The Knights called out “Where is Thomas Becket, traitor to the King and the country?” Becket replied “Here I am, no traitor to the King, but a priest.” He stood by a pillar. “Fly from the Church, or you are a dead man” they said. They tried their best to get him out of the Church, but they couldn’t succeed.

2 Document F contd. Becket lifted his head up and put his hands together. The Knights then hit him twice in the head. After the third blow he fell to his knees and said, “For the name of Jesus I am ready to die.” He did nothing to resist any of the blows. The next blow lopped off the top of his head and his brains spilled over the floor. He had been hit so hard that the sword of Richard Brito was broken. During this, one of the Knights warded off anyone who sought to interfere. A fifth knight, Hugh of Horsea, placed his boot on the neck of Becket and scattered the blood and brains all over the floor of the Church.
