Transoceanic empires States with existing colonies strengthened control over colonies – British in India, Dutch in Indonesia Europeans, Americans, and Japanese established empires through out Asia and the Pacific – British, Dutch, French, German, Russian Spanish and Portuguese empires declined.

Empires in Africa were established by warfare and diplomacy – British in West Africa, Belgium in the Congo Settler colonies established – British in Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. Economic Imperialism – British and French in China (Opium Wars), British and USA investing in Latin America.

US and European influences over Tokugawa Japan let to Meiji Japan US and Russia conquered neighboring territories Ottoman Empire contracted – independent states in the Balkans, Semi-independence Egypt, French, and Italian colonies in North Africa British Influence in Egypt later declined

New states – The Cherokee Nation, Siam, Hawai’i, The Zulu Kingdom Nationalism = new identities – German nation, Filipino nationalism, Liberian nationalism
