Age of Imperialism = European nations dominate the globe Late 1800’s – 1914 (start of WWI) Fueled by Industrial Revolution Various ways of ruling colonies, but all wanted to profit from indigenous peoples Brought with them religion, laws, and customs

8 Triggers of Decolonization
World War I and World War II Changed global policy Wilson’s 14 Points at Versailles advocates for national self-determination: the rights of people in an area to determine their own form of government “a free, open-minded, and absolutely impartial adjustment of all colonial claims, based upon a strict observance of the principle that, in determining all such questions of sovereignty, the interests of the populations concerned must have equal weight with the equitable claims of the government whose title is to be determined.” Really only meant it for European Nations Korean and Vietnamese leaders locked out of Versailles

Weakened colonial powers Between 1945 – 2000, over 50 nations gained independence Too much energy needed to fight the war = can’t focus on colonies Changed the Natives’ perception of Europeans White Man’s Burden concept gone Who is the savage now? European powers are not undefeatable
