Those little hair-like strands on the outside of the animal cell are the CILIA

The FLAGELLA is what looks like a tail on the cell

Function & Importance Cytoskeleton Flagella Cilia Maintains cell shape
Protects Cell Enables cellular motion Plays an important role in intracellular transport Is very important in cell division Helps with movement (example: sperm) Helps with movement outside cell (example: Sweeping dust particles)

Structure of a Cytoskeleton, Flagella and Cilia
A cytoskeleton is made up of microtubules, microfilaments and intermediate filaments. It also contains a plasma membrane. The flagella and Cilia are also made up of plasma membranes and microtubules. Unlike Cytoskeleton they contain Dynein Arms and Radial spokes.
