TeacherTwins©2015
2
Warm Up Simplify 3x + 4(x + 6) 4 + 2x + 3(x – 1) 7x + 24
3
Example 1: It costs $50 to rent the community swimming pool plus $5 per person that swims. Write an expression to find the cost for any number (n) of people. What is the cost for 30 people?
4
The expression $50 + $5n represents the situation.
To find the cost for 30 people substitute 30 for n. $50 + $5(30) = $200
5
Example 2: Below are the dimensions of a tomato and cucumber garden. Write an expression to represent the area of the garden. 5 x 2.5(5 + x) = x 2.5
6
Example 3: The expression 15x + 10 represents the area of the figure below. Use the distributive property to find the dimensions Find the GCF of 15x and 10. GCF = 5 3x 2 Divide 15x and 10 by the GCF. 5 15x 10 15x÷5 = 3x 10 ÷ 5 = 2 5(3x + 2)
7
Example 4: Kim has 5 more than twice as many pencils as Lin. Write an algebraic expression to represent the amount of pencils Kim has. 5 + 2c
8
Closure Write an expression to represent John has 2 times the coins plus 6 as many coins as Tim. 2c + 6
