Cellular Respiration: The Big Picture
Cellular Respiration - process by which all organisms break down organic compounds and receive energy. Breakdown of organic compounds into ATP Cellular Respiration: The Big Picture C6H12O O > 6CO H2O ATP Glucose + Oxygen > Carbon Dioxide + Water + ATP Reverse of Photosynthesis
4
Glycolysis - First step in cellular respiration
If oxygen is absent then Fermentation will take place If oxygen is present Aerobic Respiration will take place Glycolysis produces two molecules of pyruvic acid and ATP
5
Fermentation - Cellular respiration without the need of oxygen
Lactic Acid Fermentation - causes pain in muscles (Animals) Alcoholic Fermentation - Bread and Wine Making (Ethyl Alcohol from Yeasts) Animal Cells Yeasts
7
Aerobic Respiration occurs in the mitochondria and is
very efficient at producing ATP Steps to Aerobic Respiration: 1)Glycolysis occurs in Cytoplasm and turns glucose into pyruvic acid Pyruvic acid is changed into acetyl coenzyme A (Acetyl CoA) Acetyl CoA enters the….. 2)Krebs Cycle produces CO2 and ATP Electrons produced in Krebs cycle are passed down the 3)Electron Transport Chain Oxygen is the final electron acceptor and forms water Total energy produced from one molecule of glucose = 38 ATP (Maximum)
