Sincerely & Fraternally,
EUCLID MASONIC CLUB ASSOCIATION OF HOBOKEN INC. aka EUCLID MASONIC CLUB TRUSTEES INCORPORATED Brethren. "If I am not for myself, who will be for me? But if I am only for myself, what am 'I'?" This quote is attributed to Hillel the Elder. What an interesting quote this is! In it we are told that if we do not think of ourselves than nobody else will. On the other hand it states that if we are only for ourselves than what are we? At first glance the quote appears to tell us to be self- serving, and self-centered, and to only think of ourselves. However, when taking the whole quote into context, it tells us to think firstly of ourselves, yet at the same time to not get so caught up in ourselves as to lose sight of the world around us. What an interesting parallelism to Masonry. In Masonry ‘WE’ are taught to first think of ourselves and to learn how to become better men. At the same time, we are also implored to seek knowledge through the various lessons in Masonry, and to not lose sight of everything else. In this way the shadows of ignorance are slowly dispelled and replaced by the light of knowledge. As we gain more light (knowledge) we become more aware of ourselves, and our moral standing in the world. This is the lesson of the first degree. As we gain a firmer grip on our moral standing we are taught to view the world through the eyes of the creator, and view all of the wondrous works of creation as a miracle that is to be studied and learned. This is the lesson of the second degree. The lesson of the third degree is of still deeper and more abiding interest, for it points to the darkness of death and the resurrection of the soul. In it we are taught as we gain knowledge, and the shadows of ignorance are slowly replaced by the dawning of light; that we are truly resurrected into new men. Men who are not afraid to challenge ignorance, and to stand firm when the shadows of darkness seem to darken the horizons with their storm clouds. Sincerely & Fraternally, Gary E.
