Creating a Plus or a Minus for a Presentation
Audio Visual Usage Creating a Plus or a Minus for a Presentation
2
Introducing/Referencing AVs
3
Common Errors AV does not explain concept
AV contains contrary information AV is confusing, incomplete AV detracts from presentation Appearance Use/Misuse by presenter Error in AV- figures, spelling, etc.
4
Concept Errors Information does not further or reinforce concept presented. Presenter says “this chart explains the trend etc,” and the AV doesn’t explain it, there is just a graph. To make the AV effective- WATCH YOUR VERBS.
5
Clarifying Concepts with AV Use
If the AV is just to illustrate a graph, say “shows” not “explains” OR (even more effective) explain your graph orally after you refer to it. Be sure that the concept you are explaining and the AV illustration you are using to clarify it matches (don’t point to a graph illustrating water rates and talk about stream pollution).
6
Contrary Information Proofread both your presentation and your AV- if speaker says “ based on a population of 3 Million”, and your AV illustrates 5 Million, all of your information is suspect. This may markedly affect your credibility. It may also influence your audience’s opinion of your preparation.
7
Confusing/Incomplete AVs
Can be due to content- it’s just not there, or it’s phrased strangely, or it’s wrong, or it’s in variance with the oral content. Can be due to layout, or to use by the presenter.
8
AVs That Detract It’s supposed to be an aid, not a detriment
Detraction can be due to Where or how it is situated even before use How it is used by the speaker (both during and after referring to it) How it is laid out- structure, color, general appearance, misspellings

How Much is Too Much? Don’t go overboard with Special Effects-
3 D, shadowing, graphs, pie charts Remember that an AV clarifies, not confuses Plan colors and layout Make sure to illustrate important topics Make sure AV tracks with your oral content
