2. Types of Microscopes:
The compound light microscope contains two types of lenses that magnify an object
Ocular lens: closest to the eye
Objective lens: closest to the object

3. Diaphragm: controls the amount of light coming through the microscope
Nosepiece: contains the 3 revolving objective lenses
Adjustment Knobs: adjust clarity of the object
Coarse- find
Fine- focus
Other Parts:
Body Tube
Arm
Base
Stage/Stage Clips
Light

4. Example: 10 * 40 = 400x (400 times zoomed in)
To calculate the microscope’s power of magnification, multiply the power of the ocular lens (always 10x) by the power of the objective lens (4x, 10x, or 40x)
Example:
10 * 40 = 400x
(400 times zoomed in)

5. Focusing a Specimen: Use the Nosepiece to set MS to 4x
Place the slide on the stage using the stage clips
Center the specimen using the mechanical stage knobs
Use the mechanical stage knobs to raise the stage
Focus the specimen (using the fine & coarse adjustment knobs)
Use the Nosepiece to set MS to 10x
Focus the specimen again
Use the Nosepiece to set MS to 40x
Use the Nosepiece to set MS back to 4x before you swap slides and/or turn the MS off

Types of Microscopes:
A dissecting microscope is used to see 3D, not 2D like a compound microscope
They have a lower magnification than a compound microscope
Used to observe and dissect small organisms

9. Types of Microscopes:
The electron microscope has the highest magnification and resolution possible
(Up to 50,000,000x)
Uses electrons to produce images of small, even subatomic particles

10. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)
Electrons scan the object to create a 3-D image of the surface of the object

11. Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM)
A focused electron beam (like a laser), is used to look inside specimen (like an x-ray)
This is the MOST powerful microscope!
