Million Word Challenge –Independent Reading Project Monthly- every other month will be a free choice, project will be done in school I Book talk books weekly (responsible for books they check out of my room) How can I help as a parent? Provide quiet time, a place for reading nightly at home (TV off, video games off, model reading)

Argumentative writing Expository writing Writing Test – now incorporated into the Georgia Milestone test How can I help as a parent? Keep them reading Read your child’s work aloud to them. Put a check beside grammatical errors. Talk about content and expanding their thoughts. Help them to become their own editor.

Open House Organization Students should be prepared for class (book, notebook & paper, pencils, etc.) Check regularly to see if they need items replenished Are they using their agenda? Rigor is higher this year- many times there is nightly homework, especially the new vocabulary program, Membean, and Independent reading Please talk to your student about upcoming assignments Your participation in your student’s education will be key to their success Please check Parent Vue weekly and use my blog (See guidance if you have a problem)

They all have study buddies
I had them write down the names of 2 study buddies in their agendas and in their phones ( s and phone numbers) If they don’t understand the homework If they are absent Class log- they need to come in the morning during homeroom and read the Class Log first before they ask me what they missed.

Organized notebook I have given specific instructions how to organize their notebook, modeled this, and I have a sample notebook in the classroom. I am still in the process of checking their notebooks this week for a listening grade to make sure they are ready for the year. Their notebooks will be checked periodically. I have taught them how to head their papers with the MLA heading
