3
Who is Charles Darwin? Charles Darwin is best known for his theory of Evolution He began developing his theory at age 22 when he took a job as a naturalist aboard the HMS Beagle which sailed around the world on a 5 year journey Most of his observations were made on the Galapagos islands (chain of islands near the equator; just off west coast of South America) Here he noticed several species of animals that were unique to each island but had similar counterparts on the other islands
4
DARWIN’S MAIN POINTS
5
There is variation among species
VARIATION: differences SPECIES: individuals that look alike and can mate to produce fertile offspring EXAMPLES: size, color, speed, beak shape, etc.
6
All living things struggle to survive
There are many limitations to survival EXAMPLES: predation, availability of food & living space, disease, finding mating partners
7
Living things produce more offspring than can survive
to ensure that some will survive Most will die before they reproduce
8
Nature favors those individuals that are better adapted to survive
This is called NATURAL SELECTION Those individuals that do survive will likely reproduce & produce more offspring Increases the population
9
PEPPERED MOTHS

In Summary… Darwin’s main points
There is variation among species All living things struggle to survive Living things produce more offspring than can survive Nature favors those individuals that are better adapted to survive
11
LAMARCK’S EXPLANATION OF EVOLUTION
According to the diagram, how does Lamarck explain the changes that have taking place in giraffes over time? Giraffes needed to reach higher branches as food was depleted, so they stretched their necks
12
MECHANISMS OF EVOLUTION
Select one of the pictures at your table. Your task: figure out which mechanism of evolution your picture represents See list on board for possible mechanisms and reference pages Define/Describe your mechanism
13
Now join classmates that have same example
to confirm information To explain how this example represents your process Create a mini poster using schematic on next slide BONUS: provide a second example of your process on back
14
EXPLAIN HOW THE EXAMPLE REPRESENTS THIS PROCESS
BONUS: provide a second example of your process on back PROCESS DEFINE/ DESCRIBE PASTE PICTURE EXPLAIN HOW THE EXAMPLE REPRESENTS THIS PROCESS
