3. Nevado del Ruiz The final death toll was estimated at 23,000 .
However, just after 2100 a more serious eruption began causing the summit's icecap to melt and carry mud ,rocks and debris down the mountain at speeds of up to 30 miles (50 km) per hour down into Armero.

The destruction in the 1845 eruption was devastating to the surrounding population.
There were around 1000 people killed in the aftermath of the eruption.

The last eruption was in November when there were 1927 people killed in and around the village of Armero .
This is a picture of the mud slide which killed ¾ of the population of Armero.
