CHAMPS Communication – Can students engage in conversation during this activity? If yes, with whom? About what? How many students can be involved in a single conversation? Help – How do students get their questions answered? Activity – What is the expected end product of this activity? Movement – Can students get out of their seats during this activity? If yes, acceptable reasons may include: Sharpen pencil? Hand in/pick up materials? Emergency restroom break? Do they need permission from the teacher? Participation – What behaviors show that students are participating fully and responsibly? Special instructions – Does teacher have special announcements or reminders?

Beginning Class Procedures
You should be in your assigned seat, ready to work, and totally quiet when the bell to begin class rings. H Raise your hand, if you need help. I’ll help you after I take attendance. A Once you enter the classroom, get out materials for class, and begin warm up activity. M Sharpen pencil, be in assigned seat when bell rings, finish warm-up, and silently wait for instructions. P I will know you are on task if you are seated and doing warm-up activity when the bell rings. S I will tell you when it is time to stop and transition to the next activity.

Ending Class Procedures
Whisper talk, if needed. Stop talking when bell rings and wait for dismissal. H Raise your hand, if you need help. I’ll help you. A Students will be dismissed by the teacher. M Do not move until directed by the teacher. You must be seated in your assigned seat before teacher will dismiss you. P I will know you are on task if you are quiet, seated and your area is neat with no trash on floor. S My hand will go up if I have announcements, reminders, or parting words for the class.

Work Time: The Teacher is Teaching
Students are completely quiet. Do not shout out answers or talk with your neighbor. H Raise your hand, if you need help or want to participate in the discussion. A Listen to the teacher and follow directions. M Stay in your seat. Raise your hand if you need something. P Your eyes are focused on the teacher, materials, and/or the visuals. S I will check for understanding randomly, so be an active listener, and be prepared to respond appropriately.

Work Time: Independent Work
C Students are completely quiet. Raise your hand if you need help from the teacher. H Raise your hand, if you need help. I’ll help you. A You will complete your assignment correctly and on time. M Stay in your assigned seat. If you need to get out of your chair to sharpen your pencil, get a tissue, take an emergency restroom break, or turn in your paper , raise your hand to get permission. P I will know you are working if your pencil/pen is being used to write on your paper. S I will announce to the class when it is time to stop or transition to another activity. Listen to instructions.

Work Time: Group Work C H A M P S
Shhhh……….Use soft voices. (6-inch voices) H Raise your hand, if you need help. I’ll help you. A Student groups will complete their projects completely and be prepared to present findings to the class. M If you need to get out or your chair to sharpen your pencil, get a tissue, take an emergency restroom break, or turn in your paper raise your hand to get permission. P I will know you are working, if I see smiles and on-task group members. All group members will be actively doing their job for their group. S I will announce to the class when it is time to stop or transition to another activity. Listen to instructions.

Work-Time: TESTS C H A M P S
No Talking. All students are completely quiet. Keep your eyes on your own paper! H Raise your hand, if you need help. I’ll help you. A Students will focus on test and complete it, always giving their best effort. M Do not move from assigned seat unless you ask permission. P I will know you are on task if you are quietly working to complete the test. S Listen for special announcements, reminders, or further instructions.

Work Time: Clean-Up C H A M P S
Whisper talk, if needed. H Raise your hand, if you need help. I’ll help you. A All students will return art supplies to proper place, pick up everything off the floor and dispose of all trash. Make sure tops are securely on markers and glue sticks M Students may move to return supplies and throw away trash. When your area is clean, students will return to their assigned seat. P I will know you are on task if no supplies or trash is left on floor or desks and students are sitting quietly at desks. S Listen for announcements or special instructions.

Work Time: Passing Out Papers
C Continue conversation level for the activity you are involved in. (completely quiet for independent work or six-inch voices for group work.) Don’t announce your grade to the class. H Raise your hand, if you need help. I’ll help you. A All students will place returned papers in folders or binders or into blue recycling can when they leave class. Do not throw on floor or leave in desk. M Stay in your seat and wait for instructions. P I will know you are on task if you are continuing with your assignment after you have put your papers away. S I will announce to the class when it is time to stop or transition to another activity. Listen to instructions.

DEAR (Drop Everything and Read)
C No Talking. H Raise your hand, if you need help. I’ll help you. A Students will read a book or teacher-approved material. M Students will remain in assigned seats unless given special permission by teacher to move. P I will know you are on task if I see everyone reading silently. S I will announce to the class when it is time to stop.

Fire Drill Procedures C No talking. Students will remain silent while walking to destination outside, during wait and during return to class. H Raise your hand, if you need help. I’ll help you. A Students will exit building in a calm and organized manner and quietly wait in lines outside as directed by teacher. M Exit building, wait outside, and return in silent, single-file line. P I will know you are on task if you are exiting the building, waiting outside and returning to class in a silent, straight line. S Class will listen for any special instructions from teacher. Be quiet and alert. This could be a real emergency!!!!

Walking-in-the-Hall Procedures
No talking. H Raise your hand, if you need help. I’ll help you. A Students will stay in quiet line from room to destination. M Walk on right side of hall, single file and one arm-length apart. Stop at stairs and at doors until teacher says go. P I will know you are on task if you are walking in a silent, straight line, one-student-behind-the-other. S Class will listen for any special instructions from teacher.

Work-Time: Mini C0mputer Lab and DLL (Distance Learning Lab)
No Talking. Whisper talk if working with a partner. H Raise your hand, if you need help. I’ll help you. A Students will focus on research activity and never go to inappropriate or off-task websites. M Stay in your seat. Raise your hand if you need something. P I will know you are on task if you are quietly working to complete the assignment. S I will announce to the class when it is time to stop. Listen to instructions.
