1 Orchestrating Discussions
Strategies to Improve Our Summaries Jim Mamer - Clark-Shawnee School District (OH) Tommy Lingbloom - Bellingham School District (WA)

2 5 Practices for Orchestrating Discussions
Anticipation Monitoring Selecting Sequencing Connecting

3 Anticipation How might my students respond to the task?
Do the tasks ourselves: multiple ways Keep notes to aid recall the following year

4 Anticipation Task: Triangle Area
(From Covering and Surrounding 2.1, part A2) The learning goal is for students to see that the area of a triangle is half of the area of a rectangle with the same base and height. For Triangles C and D, try to find the area using as many different strategies as you can. Consider correct and incorrect strategies that students might try

5 Anticipation Task: Triangle Area
With your table, discuss some of the strategies you used. For each strategy, discuss what you might say to that student (if anything) to further their thinking.

6 Monitoring How will I monitor student approaches and support engagement? … while also planning for an effective summary by selecting, sequencing and connecting.

7 Monitoring Examples What would you say to each student, if anything?
Where might each strategy fit with your learning goal? Will you use any of these examples in your summary?

8 Selecting Which students will share their work in the summary?
Look through and discuss the provided work samples. Keeping the learning goal in mind, choose two to four that you will use in your Summary. Then...

9 Sequencing In which order will I display and discuss student work?
Order your chosen work samples, considering how you can best advance the learning of the entire class. Then...

10 Connecting How will I connect student responses to key mathematical ideas? Discuss how will you connect the chosen work samples to each other and to the learning goal.

11 Key Takeaway for Selecting, Sequencing and Connecting...
Summaries need to be intentional.
