1 A Method to Measure the Accuracy of Loads in Knee-Ankle-Foot Orthoses Using Conventional Gait Analysis, Applied to Persons With Poliomyelitis  Jan Andrysek, MASc, Susan Redekop, BASc, Naomi C. Matsui, BSc, John Kooy, Sheila Hubbard, BSc  Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation  Volume 89, Issue 7, Pages (July 2008) DOI: /j.apmr Copyright © 2008 American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine and the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Terms and Conditions

2 Fig 1 The configuration of the load cell and KAFO. (A) The load cell with custom-made attachments. (B) Subject wearing fabricated KAFO (orthotic knee joint axis and estimated anatomic knee axis illustrated). (C) Subject instrumented with load cell and reflective markers (segmental coordinate system superimposed). 3 Fig 2 Forces and moments normalized to body mass at lateral knee joint with medial knee locked. (A) Positive Fx represents the anterior shear of thigh portion (proximal load cell). (B) Positive Fy is the medial shear of thigh portion. (C) Positive Fz is axial tension. (D) Positive Mx is a valgus moment. (E) Positive My is a knee extension moment. (F) Positive Mz is internal rotation moment on the shank (distal load cell). Abbreviations: S1, subject 1; S2, subject 2; S3, subject 3; S4, subject 4. 4 Fig 3 Forces and moments normalized to body mass at lateral knee joint with medial knee unlocked. (A) Positive Fx is anterior shear of thigh portion (proximal load cell). (B) Positive Fy is medial shear of thigh portion. (C) Positive Fz is axial tension. (D) Positive Mx is a valgus moment. (E) Positive My is a knee extension moment. (F) Positive Mz is internal rotation moment on the shank (distal load cell). Abbreviations: S1, subject 1; S2, subject 2; S3, subject 3; S4, subject 4. 5 Fig 4 Sagittal plane knee moments normalized to body mass are presented for the medial knee joint unlocked. Knee moments corresponding to (A) subject 1, (B) subject 2, (C) subject 3, and (D) subject 4. Subject numbers in the headings correspond to those in table 1. Mlc is measured using the load cell, Mvo is measured in the Vicon at the orthotic axis, Mvas is measured in the Vicon at the anatomic axis defined with a constant offset from the orthotic axis, Mvad is measured in the Vicon at the anatomic axis tracked dynamically, and Mvad+vc is Mvad plus the effect of fixed knee flexion contracture.
