NYS Mathematics Standards: Prior Knowledge: Skip count by 2’s to 12
October 21, Math 201 Objective: Students will understand unit fractions as the basis for understanding equivalent fractions. Aim: What operations can we use on the numerator and denominator of a unit fraction that will create equivalent fractions? NYS Mathematics Standards: Prior Knowledge: Skip count by 2’s to 12 Skip count by 3’s to 15 Skip count by 4’s to 20
2
Mini Lesson: Fractions are equivalent when they occupy the same amount of space in a whole: The area occupied by these fractions is the same! Each of these equivalent fractions names the same value and occupies the same space!
3
Start with the numerator of the first fraction and skip count by the same amount, then do the same for the denominator
4
Let’s create equivalent fractions using this method:
Add 1 to the numerator to get the next numerator Add 5 to the denominator to get the next denominator
5
Guided Practice: Write 3 equivalent fractions for each of the following by starting with the unit fraction and skip-counting: ¼ = ____ = ____ = ____ 1/6 = ____ = ____ = ____ /3 = ____ = _____ = ____ Independent Practice: Open your workbook to page 32 and do problems 17 – 22 while Mr. Brooks stops by your desk to review your work. Homework: Equivalent Fractions worksheet
