Subtracting mixed numbers
To subtract mixed numbers, first subtract the fraction parts. Example: 7 3/12 – 5 2/12 = 2 2/12 Sometimes the second numerator is larger than the first. You may have to rename the number. example : 5 1/ /4. Make 5 1/4 into 4 5/4 by making a one from the 5 into 4/4. then subtract 4 5/4 – 3 3/4 = 1 2/4 = 1 1/2.
