Flashback . . . Aristotle divided speaking into three categories: forensic (speaking in court, deliberative (political or legislative speaking), and epideictic (ceremonial speaking) Although there are many types of ceremonial or special occasion speeches that deal with praise (or blame) of a person, object, place, or idea, Aristotle felt that the best ones relate to the audience and build on what the audience admires or hates most about the character, virtue, achievements, or contributions.
