2 Physical Property A characteristic that can be observed without changing the identity of the substance Examples: Shape, Size, Texture, Color, State of Matter, Magnetism, Strength, Flexibility, Density, etc.

3 What are physical properties?
Mass - The amount of matter (stuff) in an object Weight - the pull of gravity on an object’s mass

4 Volume – the amount of space a sample of matter occupies
Solubility – the ability of one material to dissolve in another

5 Density - The mass of a substance per volume (D=m/v)

6 States of Matter: Solid –molecules are tightly packed and vibrate, has a definite shape Liquid –molecules are loosely packed and move fluidly, takes shape of container and has a surface Gas –molecules are not packed and move freely, no definite shape

7 States of Matter Gas Solid Liquid

8 Chemical Property The ability or inability of a substance to combine with or change into one or more new substances A characteristic of matter that you observe as it reacts with or changes into a different substance

9 What are chemical properties?
Flammability – ability to burn Reactivity – ability to undergo a chemical reaction

10 Ability to Oxidize – ability to rust
Toxicity – the degree to which a substance can damage an organism
