From Observational Data to Information (OD2I IG )
Jay Pearlman and Markus Stocker RDA Meeting January
2
Brief Recap of Purpose of WG/IG
Understanding the data and information value chain – “data to information (to knowledge)” OD2I studies and advances understanding of the interface between users and research infrastructures in the data use phase of the research data lifecycle Building on collected use cases, the OD2I IG advances understanding for how observational data evolve to information via interpretation
3
Process and Development Platform for continued assessments
OD2I Objectives Engage variety of stakeholders Collect use cases, solutions and challenges as reported by stakeholders Develop solutions to unresolved challenges Transfer solutions across stakeholders Process and Development Platform for continued assessments
4
What has been accomplished to date?
A bird of a feather session at 9th Plenary – Introduction to subject and definition of scope; interest in moving ahead but more discussion needed. Monthly meetings (and more) over the last year to work out details Proposal for an IG recently with objective to have first meeting at 11th Plenary
5
Issues and Challenges Scoping
Aligning with the European Research Infrastructures Identifying use cases
6
Use Cases Aerosol Science Biodiversity and Conservation Science
Precision Agriculture Intelligent Transportation Systems
7
Aerosol Science Use Case
Observational data: Aerosol particle size distribution Information: Machine readable descriptions of particle formation events Activity: Human-in-the-loop visual data interpretation
8
Plan for Next 12 Months OD2I IG kick-off session at Plenary 11 in Berlin Liaise with related RDA IGs and WGs as well as groups outside RDA Develop the OD2I IG’s reference conceptualization White paper on developed reference conceptualization Finalize the template for use case descriptions/update and expand use cases Analyse the use cases for commonalities and differences Identify and report common challenges Collect feedback from teams implementing use cases

10
Fitting the RDA mission
RDA Plenary Theme: "From Data to Knowledge" Socio-technical support for interpretation of primary data Realize paths to improved information and knowledge-based systems Increased usability of data as information by both humans and machines Machines enabled in automated processing of information

Best Practices in Ocean Observing Looking at the end to end value chain Jay Pearlman
13
Status of Ocean Best Practices (BP)
Large investments in high quality measurements Quality of BP Documentation varies widely Access to BP is challenging Data and metadata formats are inconsistent Machine readability is limited (if at all) Sustainability is often not guaranteed
14
Best Practices Structure
15
Best Practices Flow
16
Best Practice System Introduce PIDs – DOI, ORCHID
Expand repository capabilities – based on IOC/IODE Ocean Best Practices Repository Introduce consistent metadata structure through templates and through metadata enhancement Introduce sematic-based search and draw on community vocabularies Alignment with FAIR principles and open operations Introduction of community peer review including Research Topic in Frontiers in Marine Science
17
Do we fit within RDA - Are we part of an Interest Group (e.g. Marine Data Harmonization)? Are we a working group? Or Are we an adopter?
