STAGE ONE: ORAL STAGE Year 1: children explore the world and receive pleasure through their mouths An individual who does not have his/her needs met at this stage become stuck or fixated and seek to satisfy needs through oral means (overeating, smoking, nail biting, act) May be clinging or overly needy in interpersonal relationships

STAGE TWO: ANAL STAGE Years : children begin to gain control over their bodies (toilet training) Fixation at this stage can lead to two types of personalities: Anal retentive: overly perfectionist, very clean, excessive need for order Anal expulsive: careless, messy

STAGE THREE: PHALLIC STAGE
Years 3-4: boys and girls discover they are “different” and become interested in their own bodies Develop strong attachment to opposite sex parent (Oedipus/Electra Complex) Unresolved emotions at this stage may lead to depression, guilt and anxiety in later life

STAGE FOUR: LATENCY STAGE
Years 5-6: children go into a dormant stage after the conflict of last stage and urges and drives are latent (hidden) until puberty

STAGE FIVE: GENITAL STAGE
Years: Puberty plus Final stage of psychological development Works on gender identity and management and resolution of conflicts from earlier conflicts
