Figure 1 p53 Mediates Apoptosis by Direct Effects in Both the Nucleus and the Mitochondria A well-characterized pathway involves p53-mediated effects in the nucleus (blue) on gene expression leading to a transcriptional-dependent induction of apoptosis. A variety of relevant target genes have been identified and are listed here. Recent studies from Mihara et al. and Dumont et al. support a second, transcriptionally independent pathway involving localization of p53 to the mitochondria (yellow), followed by binding and inhibition of bcl-xL and/or bcl-2.
