Stephen Douglas and the Railroad
Supported a continental railroad Originate from Chicago Southerners did not agree Wanted it to originate from New Orleans Desired a southern route through Texas and New Mexico

Kansas-Nebraska Act In order for Douglas to get southern support the Louisiana Purchase had to be organized into territories. Kansas Nebraska Allow the people in each territory to decide on slavery (popular sovereignty) Would eliminate the Missouri Compromise restriction of slavery above line

Trouble in Kansas Anti-slavery and Pro-slavery groups both rushed to Kansas to vote 5000 proslavery individuals crossed over the border from Missouri to vote then crossed back Kansas became pro-slavery In protest anti-slavery groups set their own legislature in Topeka

Pro-slavery grand jury charges anti-slavery leaders with treason 800 men went to Lawrence to arrest the men Anti-slavery leaders flee 800 men destroy Lawrence killing one man John Brown’s Response Killed 5 pro-slavery men Pottawatomie Massacre

Preston Brooks beats Charles Sumner with a walking stick. For this Brooks received a $ fine and dozens of walking sticks from supporters. It took Sumner 3 years to recover and return to the Senate.
