1 Returning to the Roots Civil Rights Bus Tour Sponsored by Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts March 7-16, 2014

2 Tour Rationale This tour commemorates the significant events of the Civil Rights era Students will travel via bus from North Adams to several iconic Civil Rights sites across the American South

3 TRVL 300-CIVIL RIGHTS This is a 3 credit travel course that will meet weekly in Spring 2014 until the trip and meet after the trip for wrap-up. Assessments: – Readings – Films – Journal You may go on the trip without receiving credit, if you wish but will not be eligible for financial aid.

4 Costs Total cost to students: $1,700.00 Price includes: transportation, lodging, entrance to all sites and exhibits, and some meals Price does not include all food and incidental spending Eligible for financial aid and competitive stipends via MCLA

5 PAYMENTS OCTOBER 15 th $500.00 DECEMBER 15 th $600.00 JANUARY 15 th $600.00 TOTAL:$1.700.00

6 Day 1: Washington, D.C. Leave North Adams to Washington, D.C. We will visit Washington, D.C. and the Museum of African American History

7 Day 2: Greensboro, North Carolina We will visit in Greensboro: International Civil Rights Center & Museum North Carolina A & T

8 Day 3: Atlanta, Georgia In Atlanta, we will visit: MLK Center Talk on Civil Rights with Juanita Abernathy

9 Day 4: Albany, Georgia & Montgomery Alabama On Day 4, we will visit: Albany Civil Rights Institute Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site, Tuskegee, AL

10 Day 5: Selma, Alabama On Day 5, we will visit: Lowndes County Interpretative Center Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church Tour w/ Ms. Joanne Bland National Voting Rights Museum & Institute

11 Day 6: Montgomery & Birmingham, Alabama On Day 6, we will visit: Civil Rights Memorial & Visitors Center Freedom Rider Museum Rosa Parks Museum Birmingham Civil Rights Institute

12 Day 7: Memphis, Tennessee On Day 7, we will visit: Stax Museum of American Soul Music National Civil Rights Museum Meeting with the Rev. Samuel Kyles

13 Day 8: Nashville, Tennessee On Day 8, we will visit: Civil Rights Tour of Nashville

14 Day 9: Begin Trip back to North Adams On Day 9, we will begin our return trip to North Adams We will stop in Cleveland, Ohio to visit the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center

15 Day 10: Return to North Adams
