1 Chapter 5 - Red Station 1. ……..…… 2. 3. …….….. Use the above ticker tape diagrams and tell me which one is accelerating, 1, which one is decelerating, 3, and which one is at a constant speed. 2 4. Draw a sketch of what a velocity/time graph of each of these would show. It should show if the line is going up, 1, down,3, horizontal, 2? 5. 6. Define Force. A push or a pull 7. Define Acceleration. The rate of change in motion 8. Define Gravity. (be sure to mention the two factors that affect it and how) force of attraction between objects – it is affected by mass, making it larger, and distance. The greater the distance between the objects, the less the gravity pull. 9. Define Friction. A force that opposes motion between objects in contact 10. Define Speed. The distance traveled by an object divided by the time it took for the object to cover that distance

11. Define Velocity. The speed of an object in a certain direction 12. Define Weight. What two factors determine it? the force with which gravity pulls on an object. It is determined by the mass and the amount of gravity pulling on the object. Make sure to show your work and use the appropriate units for each answer. 13. A roller coaster car rapidly picks up speed as it rolls down a slope. As it starts down the slope, its speed is 8 m/s. But 4 seconds later, at the bottom of the slope, its speed is 28 m/s. What is its average acceleration? 28 – 8 divided by 4 = 6 m/s2 14. A cyclist accelerates from 0 m/s to 8 m/s in 3 seconds. What is his acceleration? 8 – 0 divided by 3 = 2.67 m/s2 15. You are traveling in a car that is moving at a velocity of 20 m/s. Suddenly, a car 10 meters in front of you slams on it’s brakes. At that moment, you also slam on your brakes and slow to 5 m/s. Calculate the acceleration if it took 2 seconds to slow your car down. 5 – 20 divided by 2 = -7.5 m/s2

Calculate the acceleration of the dropped ball – 0 divided by 2 = 9.8 m/s2 17. A car changes speed from 30 km/h to 45km/h in 5 seconds. What is the average acceleration? divided by 5 = 3 m/s2 18. Maria accelerates at 0.5m/s/s. How fast is she going after 7 seconds? .5 x 7 = 3.5 m/s *note: this is a speed measurement so the unit is m/s. 19. Describe what is happening in this graph. Starts off going fast, 30 y/s, then it stops for 2 seconds and then it goes slower, 10 y/s.

Calculate the velocity of a dancer who moves 20m toward the right of the stage over the course of 40s. 20m/40 s = .5 m/s to the right 27. How far (in meters) will you travel in 2 minutes running at a rate of 8 m/s? solve for distance – speed x time – 8m/s x 2 x 60 = 960 meters 28. If your slow pace walking was 0.6 m/s, how long would it take you to walk 100 meters at that rate? (Remember your speed triangle) solve for time – distance divided by speed – 100/.6 m/s = seconds 29. If your fast pace walking was 1.5 m/s, how l far could you walk in 2 minutes. Solve for distance – speed x time = 1.5 x 2 = 3 meters 30. What is the difference between static and kinetic friction? Static friction holds the object in place while kinetic has motion 31. How will the motion of a ball rolling on the ground change if the ball encounters a frictional force that opposes its motion? The ball will slow down and eventually stop. D S T

7 Chapter 5 Brown Station 32. How many seconds will it take for a satellite to travel 450 km at a rate of 120m/s? 450 km = m solve for time – d/s = km/120 m/s = 3,750 m 33. If a cyclist in the Tour de France traveled southwest a distance of 12,250 meters in one hour, what would the velocity of the cyclist be in km/h? m/hr = km/hr southwest 34. A trip to Cape Canaveral Florida takes 10 hours. The distance is 816 km. Calculate the average speed. 816/10 = 81.6 km/hr 35. Describe what is happening in this graph. The car travels at a steady speed of 20 yards per second for 2 seconds it then changes direction and travels at the same steady speed in the opposite direction.

A substance made of one kind of particle – it could be an element or a compound 38. What is the difference between speed and velocity? Velocity includes direction but speed does not. 39. State the law of universal gravitation. This law states that all objects in the universe attract each other through a gravitational force that is determined by mases of objects and the distance between them.
