Week 8 Notes Mirrors and lenses
2
Reflection of Light Ways
Reflection you see in a mirror depends on how the surface _REFLECTS_ light. Light waves are straight lines called __RAYS__. The 2 ways in which a surface can reflect light are __REGULAR_ reflection and _DIFFUSE_ reflection.
3
Regular Reflection and Diffuse Reflection
Parallel rays of light hit a __SMOOTH__ surface, ___REGULAR___ reflection occurs. All of the light rays are reflected at the __SAME__ angle. Diffuse Parallel rays of light hit a __BUMPY_ or uneven surface is ___DIFFUSE__ reflection. Rays reflect at a __DIFFERENT___ angles.
4
Plane Mirrors A plane mirror is a __FLAT_ sheet of glass that has a __SMOOTH_, silver-colored coating on 1 side. An __IMAGE___ is a copy of an object formed by ____REFLECTED__ or __REFRACTED__ rays of light. How it’s made Mirror – 5:57
5
What kind of image forms
The image you see in a plane mirror is a ___VIRTUAL____ ____IMAGE____. ___VIRTUAL___ describes something that does not really exist. A plane mirror produces a virtual image that is __UPRIGHT__ and the __SAME__ size as the object. The ___LEFT___ and __RIGHT__ are reversed
6
Concave Mirrors A mirror with a surface that curves __INWARD__ is called a ___CONCAVE___ mirror. The optical axis is like the ____EQUATOR___. The point at which rays parallel to the optical axis meet is called ___FOCAL__ ___POINT
7
Determining the Type of Image
Concave mirrors can form either __VIRTUAL__ images or __REAL__ images. A __REAL_ image forms when rays actually meet. A real image may be __LARGER__ or ____SMALLER____ than the object. 2 examples of a concave mirror are __MAKEUP MIRROR___ and ___HEADLIGHT___.
8
Convex Mirrors A mirror with a surface that curves __OUTWARD____ is called a convex mirror. Images formed by convex mirrors are always __VIRTUAL__ and __SMALLER__ than the object. Advantage of a convex mirror is to allow a __LARGER__ area. Disadvantage is __SMALLER_ size, so it appears __FURTHER___ away. Example of this is a ___PASSENGER – SIDE MIRROR_______. Wooden Mirror: (2:19)
9
Refraction of Light Refraction in Different Mediums
When light rays enter a medium at an angle, the change in speed causes the rays to __BEND__. Refraction in Different Mediums Light travels the fastest in __AIR__ and the slowest in ___SOLID__ Index of refraction is a measure of how much a ray of light _BENDS__ when entering a material
10
Prisms and Rainbows Mirage
Red refracts the __LEAST___ and Violet refracts the ___MOST__. Mirage An image of a distant object caused by __REFRACTION__ of light is a ___MIRAGE___.
11
Lenses Convex Lenses A lens is a ____CURVED___ piece of glass.
Convex lens is __THICKER__ in the center than the edges. A convex lens is like a ___CONCAVE___ mirror. Water Death Ray: (2:31)
12
Concave Lenses A concave lens is __THINNER___ in the __CENTER__ than the edges. Concave lens can only produce __VIRTUAL__ images because ___PARALLEL___ light rays passing through the lens __NEVER___ meet.
