The Great Depression Bad Times in Canadian History

2 Black Tuesday On October 29th 1929 the stock market crashed which began the beginning of the Great Depression “Black Tuesday” Many people lost their jobs and Canadians became poor

3 THE 6 CAUSES OF THE GREAT DEPRESSION

4 Cause #1- Too much production
During the 1920’s many companies were getting bigger and making more products Many products were stored in warehouses because Canadians could not afford to buy all of them

5 Cause #2 - Canada depended on a few primary products
Canada’s economy depended on wheat, fish, minerals and pulp and paper If the world needed these items Canada’s economy would be okay

6 Cause #3- Canada needed the U.S.A. too much
Canada’s economy in the 1920’s was closely related to the United States 65% of our imports were from the U.S. 40% of our exports went to the U.S.

7 Cause #4- High Taxes To protect their own companies countries around the world put a tax on products from other countries This caused trade between countries to slow down

8 Cause #5- Too much credit buying
People used their credit card to buy new products People got themselves into debt by using the credit card If someone lost their job they could not pay their credit card bill

9 Cause #6- Too much credit buying of stocks
The stock market during the 1920’s seemed like an easy way to make money You could buy stocks on credit if you did not have the money to buy them

10 Important Terms of the 1930’s
Doubling up families that live together in one house The dole money given to families by the government The dust bowl on the prairies there was no rain and it became very dry Transient a man who jumps on trains to find a job

11 What did the Canadian government do to help Canadians?
The government set up relief camps to help unemployed men A relief camp was a place where men could live. They dug ditches and earned a few dollars The food was not good and the living conditions were poor

12 On to Ottawa Trek Men from relief camps went to Ottawa to speak to the Prime Minister This was called the Ottawa Trek

13 A transient looking for a job
