1 Academic Vocabulary Weeks 5-6 1st Nine Weeks

2 Fact A statement that can be proved true or false.
Facts can be proven by reading, observing, or asking an expert.

3 Opinion A statement that tells a person’s thoughts, feelings, or ideas. I think Mr. Tom is a cool teacher.

4 Important Ideas The main ideas and details about a topic that the author wants the reader to understand. (nonfiction texts) Important Ideas Details

5 Essay A short literary composition, or piece of writing, that tells a person’s thoughts or opinions about a subject.

6 Phrasing The way that someone puts words together to express something. A noun phrase consists of a noun and all its modifiers. Here are examples: The lost and bewildered tourist The senile old man A verb phrase consists of a verb and all its modifiers. He was waiting for the rain to stop. Watching the pot, he was upset when it didn't boil.

7 Persuasive Text Text that’s good at making people agree to do or believe what you want them to do. Prompt- Write an editorial persuading your classmates to vote for a new after-school activity.
