1 Warm-up Page 37D Q 1-6 How is the periodic table arranged?
What is so important about the groups in the periodic table? Illustrate a Na+ ion.

3 How are elements different?
Elements are either metals, non-metals, and metalloids Each elements has a different level of reactivity Reactive- indicates how likely an element is to undergo a chemical change

4 Metals Elements that: Conduct electricity & heat
Are malleable (bendable) Are shiny Most are solids at room temperature Found on periodic table - Groups 1-14*; most elements are metals

5 Reactive Metals Group 1- Alkali Metals: most reactive of ALL groups
Group 2- Alkaline Earth Metals: very reactive but not quite as much as Group 1 Both groups especially reactive with water.

6 Transition Metals Groups 3-12
Less reactive but are usually very malleable Very good conductors Gold, Silver, Iron, Copper, etc….

7 Rare Earth Metals Atomic numbers 57-71 are called Lanthanides.
Atomic numbers are called Actinides. Hard to isolate in pure form so they are called rare.

8 Non-metals These elements are: poor conductors not malleable
usually dull mostly gas at room temp Right side of periodic table

9 Halogens Group 17 Very reactive and love to form “salts”
Which metals do you think halogens would react with easily?

10 Noble Gases Group 18 These gases do not react with anybody so are considered “noble”

11 Metalloids Elements that have properties of both metals and non-metals
Most common metalloid is Silicon Silicon is used to make microchips for computers because it is a semiconductor

12 Assessment What are 3 major differences between metals and non-metals? (Name 4 if you can!!) What does it mean by a “reactive” metal? Classify the following elements as a metal or non-metal: Calcium, Sulfur, Tin, Neon, Nitrogen, Mercury

13 Assignment Copy the periodic table from the next slide. Use your own color system but label each region and include a color key. This must stay in your notebook. Include all terms discussed today as well as numbers of groups and periods. Periodic Table

15 Class 2 Periodic Table Halogens Noble gases Alkali metals
Using your own coloring system, color the metals, non-metals and metalloids a different color. Make sure you have a legend to define each color. Make a legend on the table labeling the following groups: Halogens Noble gases Alkali metals Alkaline earth metals Transition elements
