Economy Then Traditionally depended on exports from agriculture
Restructuring in the 1990s reduced the government’s role in economy and released some debt In 20th Century switched from a state-controlled economy to a more market-oriented one Depend on dairy, meat, wool etc

Economy Now Manufacturing is the main employment- twice as many as agriculture Financial, insurance and business services are a big part of the economy Tourism is the fastest growing sector of the economy Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is $17,700 USD GDP measures the national output for a country’s economy Total market value for goods and services produced in a calendar year Now one of the most open economies in the world

1/6 of New Zealand’s exports are from a dairy cow Over 4 million dairy cows Sheep Used to make up 1/3 of exports Used to be said that New Zealand had 20 times more sheep than humans Cattle Much of it is used for American hamburgers Deer, goats and pigs Poultry Bees Crops Fruits and Vegetables Vineyards Cows- mostly in the North Island Sheep- wool used mainly for carpets. Also use the meat. More in the south island Bee farms- healing honey Crops- wheat and barley Fruits and Vegetables- Kiwi and Apples
