1 Module C: Ecology & the Environment.
CANGSS: MS-LS2-1. Analyze and interpret data to provide evidence for the effects of resource availability on organisms and populations of organisms in an ecosystem. Module C: Ecology & the Environment. Unit 2: Relationships in Ecosystems Lesson 1: Resource availability in Ecosystems.

2

3 Objective (s)/ I can: Relate how resource availability affects the growth of organisms and populations. Predict the factors that can influence resource availability.

4

5

6

7 How can a population grow or get smaller?
Population- is a group of organisms of one species that live in the same area at the same time. What can cause the population to change?

8 Population Size New individuals are added to the population it grows.
Individuals are removed from population gets smaller. Population stays the same size Individuals added = Individual removed

9 Explore: Activity Tasks
Option A Option B Option C Describe your observation for each image. Write the label that best matches what is happening in each image Think and describe a situation of how abundant resources affect the growth of an individual. 1. Compare the effects of abundant and shortage of resources on the growth of individuals and populations respectively in different regions in UAE. Explain: How resource availability can affect the growth of individuals and populations.

10 Elaborate: Extended thinking: Integration with Microbiology
Why in the case of water shortage, drought season, the plant wither and loses its normal shape? Explain this phenomenon starting from the cellular level. Answer: Without water, the vacuole will not be able to exert pressure against the other cellular structures, the walls of the cell, as a result the cells collapses inward. Because this is happening in each cell, the entire plant loses its normal shape.

11 Exit Card Recall -- Hypothesize – Explain- Conclude
Indicate what determines the growth of individuals and population? DOK1 (1 pt.) Predict the environmental condition or factor that would increase the population of butterflies. DOK2 (1 pt.) Explain what would happen if bees migrated to the butterflies habitat. Justify your answer. DOK3 (1 pt.) Conclude the two factors that can influence resource availability.DOK3 (2 pts.)

12

13 Group A Population size (count the number of animal toy models): ----
Case 1: Emigration of 5 individuals New population size: Case 2: Immigration of 3 individuals New population size: Case 3: Death of 4 individuals Case 4: Birth of 7 individuals

14 Two key Migration Terms
Emigration - when individuals leave a population. Immigration - When individuals join a population.

15 How can a population grow or get smaller?
The bird from Population A. The bird to Population B. 1-Emigrate, 2- immigrate
