Background—Organ Donation
In its 2006 report, "Organ Donation: Opportunities for Action” the Institute of Medicine suggested devoting research efforts to identify new ways to improve the organ donation system and increase donation rates. Organ Donation

Based on findings from the Deceased Donor Potential Study (DDPS) by the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network, there are approximately 35,000-40,000 potential donors each year meeting basic criteria for donation in the U.S. Organ Donation

Background—The Spanish Model
Spain has been known as the world-leading country of organ transplantation. In 2017, Spain broke its own world record by reaching 46.9 donors per million population Organ Donation

Key features of the Spanish Model include having intensivists, who are staff members of the donor hospital, be in charge of: the critical care management of the potential organ donor to preserve the option of organ donation the consent for organ donation Organ Donation

Preservation of Organ Donation (POD) Team
Two teams have been created at NYU Langone and NYU Brooklyn Teams consist of intesivists, social workers, nurses/nurse practitioners Organ Donation

POD Team Collaborate with the primary healthcare team to medically manage the patient to preserve the option of organ donation Hemodynamics/fluid management Ventilator Management Pneumonia prevention and early antibiotics Organ Donation

POD Team Also take on the role of Designated Requestor
Required designated requestor training by LiveOnNY Request consent for organ donation from families/authorized person Organ Donation

POD Team OBJECTIVE OUTCOMES
To assist in the management and consent process of ICU patients with imminent neurological death and who are eligible for organ donation. OUTCOMES Consents obtained for donation by POD Team Number of organs procured Organ Donation

PROCESS Patient referred to LiveOnNY with imminent neurological death and meets inclusion/exclusion criteria. LiveOnNY alerts POD Team leadership that a referral has been made POD team member collaborates with primary care team to medically manage patient and optimize organ function to preserve option of organ donation. Patient progresses to brain death or family decided to withdrawal life sustaining therapies. Authorized party approached by POD team member for consent for organ donation or notification of patient as registered organ donor. Patient donates organs or authorized party declines consent.
