2 Quality First Phonics Foundation 1
Daily 10 minute activities from Phase 1 - Playing with Sounds Foundation 2 Begin with Phase 2 when all the class are able to orally blend and segment Foundation 2 and Year 1 Should receive daily 20 minute phonics teaching Year 2 Spelling strategies are taught Phonics is taught as a whole class with additional catch - up sessions for new arrivals

Inclusive and engaging for all learners and caters for different learning styles Technical language introduced early on Enthusiastic and interactive Impact on Teaching Quality First Teaching Simple, clear structure Emphasis on Speaking and Listening Consistent approach to teaching reading strategies throughout phonics, shared and guided reading

Children’s ability to verbalise the strategies (decoding and meaning) Emphasis on reading for meaning Insistence on correct language structures Impact on Learning Recognition of sight vocabulary Enjoyment and enthusiasm Grammatical links Impact on progress Child involvement Consistency with the language associated with strategies

7 The Offer and Funding Core 2 schools have now been selected. Schools who applied for core 2 and who were not selected will be offered Universal training We have the capacity to support 10 additional schools in the Universal programme Work is underway to allow us to spread some the messages more rapidly. All training will be funded by WIT

8 Application Process Schools will be sent a letter and audit form. Those wishing to apply for universal will need to complete and return this.
