The pictures of ships in battle may suggest a military background, while the skull and letter suggest a man of learning, as does the fact that this is a self-portrait.

Joker’s makeup is a clown gone horribly wrong, indicating his past as an intelligent, normal human being who has been twisted by circumstances (and in this case a heavy dose of toxic chemicals.) The purple suit suggests royalty, reflecting his role as the king of bad guys, while he holds a joker in his hand, reminding us how much he loves to play tricks and games.
