The burette is not clamped securely. Hazard1 Broken glass should always be cleared up carefully before proceeding to ensure that nobody cuts themselves. The clamp should always be secure so that the burette does not slip but if it is too tight, the burette might break. What to do if something goes wrong? Risk 1 What can be done to minimize the risk? The burette could slip out of the clamp, smash and break, leaving sharp, broken glass that could cut you. Hazard 2 The acid and alkali are corrosive and could splash. What to do if something goes wrong? Acid and alkali should be washed off skin and clothing immediately. Low concentrations of acid and alkali should be used. Eye protection should be worn at all times. What can be done to minimize the risk? Risk 2 It could go onto your skin or in your eyes and burn you. Hazard 3 The acid could spill when the burette is being filled. Risk 3 The spilt acid could burn your skin or your eyes. What can be done to minimize the risk? A funnel should be used to fill the burette. The burette should be filled at a sensible height (perhaps moved onto a stool). Eye protection should be worn at all times. What to do if something goes wrong? Acid and alkali should be washed off skin and clothing immediately. Hazard 4 The fragile glass could break. Take care when clamping the burette. When not using the pipette, place it in a safe place where it cannot roll off the bench. What can be done to minimize the risk? Risk 4 The sharp glass could cut you. What to do if something goes wrong? Broken glass should be cleared up immediately before proceeding. Minor cuts should be washed under the tap, checked for glass embedded and have a plaster placed on them. Perygl Risg Hazard5 Bags and stools could cause you to trip. You could trip and hurt yourself or knock over the apparatus. (Not just for this experiment) Risk 5 What can be done to minimize the risk? The response to a fall will depend upon the severity. There may be physical damage from the fall, broken glass and / or spilt chemicals. Bags, stools and any other trip hazard should be put away. Some stools may be used to place stands on when filling burettes so care must be taken. What to do if something goes wrong? A Bunsen is used and there is hot equipment when evaporating. Hazard6 Risk 6 There is a fire risk and risk of being burned. What to do if something goes wrong? In the case of fire the gas supply should be turned off immediately and suitable fire fighting measures taken, (fire blanket, water / powder extinguisher used). Burns should be held under a cold tap for 10 minutes and assessed for severity. Bunsens should be lit and left on safety flames when not in use. A heatproof mat should be used. Care should be taken with hot equipment and tripods should always be moved holding the feet. What can be done to minimize the risk?
