Nuremberg War Trials – Holocaust 23 Nations tried war criminals 22 Nazi leaders were tried, Hitler’s most trusted party officials There were also Doctor’s Trials and Lawyer Trials

Crimes against the Peace – planning and waging an aggressive war War crimes – acts against the customs of warfare ie. Killing hostages and prisoners, or destruction of towns and cities Crimes Against Humanity – murder, extermination, deportation, or enslavement of civilians

Hermann Göring ( ) Hitler’s successor and head of the “Luftwaffe” committed suicide the night before his execution with a cyanide capsule he had hidden in a jar of skin medication. Rudolph Hess – Convicted of crimes that were being committed in the East, and proposed laws discriminating against Jews and Poles. Was sentenced to life imprisonment at Spandau prison, committed suicide in 1987. The prison was destroyed shortly after

Occupation of Japan Prime Minister Hideki Tojo and prison guards put on trial 7 including Tojo were sentenced to death Trials were also conducted in the Philippines, China and other Asian battlegrounds MacArthur introduced free-market practices New Constitution provided for woman suffrage and basic freedoms.
