Sectionalism: Where the North and the South both had their own goals. Looking at the chart, why do you think there are so many differences between North and South? North South Develop factory jobs that don’t require slaves. Pass laws to promote trade and factory jobs. Make sure new territory added are free states. Expand farm jobs that do require slaves. Pass laws to protect slavery and farm jobs. Make sure new territory added are slave states.

9 After the E.Q. Missouri Compromise of 1820: New states below the line would become slave states, while new states above the line would become free states. What problems do you see with acquiring new land to the United States with the Missouri Compromise?

Directions: For each number below, tell me which side (North or South) wanted that result, and why. California admitted as a free state. New Mexico and Utah admitted as slave states. The slave trade (buying and selling of Africans) was abolished (ended). The fugitive slave law was passed.

11 After the E.Q. Another Compromise: The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854
Created the territories of Kansas and Nebraska (north of the Missouri Compromise line), and allowed the settlers there to decide whether to be free or slave. The North argued: Violated the Missouri Compromise. The South argued: The Missouri Compromise was replaced by the Compromise of 1850. Which side had the better argument (North or South)? Why?

15 After the E.Q. Abraham Lincoln was elected president of the United States in 1860 Lincoln gave numerous speeches denouncing slavery. He did very well in the Northern states. No Southern state voted for Lincoln. North Carolina Was North Carolina a Northern or Southern state? Based on your answer to #1, what do you think North Carolina thought of Abraham Lincoln?
