Dry legal bit…. 7 (1) e “giving encouragement and other support to activities that benefit the social or economic life of communities living near … designated sites” 9 (6) b “consider the likely effect of the implementation of [the NDA strategy] on the economic life of communities living near the installation, site or facility.” 10 (2) c “The powers of the NDA include… power to make grants or loans to persons undertaking activities that benefit the social or economic life of communities living near designated installations” Total expenditure on socio-economic projects around £15m p/a – of which around 2 thirds goes to West Cumbria

3 What does that mean in practice
NDA’s approach is set out in its strategy published April 2016 “Our strategy is to support the economic development of communities affected by our activities. This focuses on employment, education and skills, economic and social infrastructure and diversification. In order to deliver our strategy we work with our SLCs, subsidiaries, our suppliers, new build organisations and EDFE to develop and share best practice to create synergies in our socio-economic activity.”

4 NDA’s role – oversight and efficiencies
Listening - best choices come from local understanding and knowledge. Evidence-based - HMT Green book means we need facts and analysis. Governance – Transparent and gated decision making. Record keeping. Internal and external audit and scrutiny. Outcomes – project are and will be evaluated. Best practice, efficiencies, learning, but most importantly listening Linkages National nuclear skills work Apprenticeships Research and development Major projects Procurement Transformation at Sellafield
