Make your own film Persuading people to reduce food waste
These slides are to help you prepare for making a short film in class about how to reduce food waste. It is intended that children would have a good understanding of the issues and the actions that would help reduce waste before beginning the project. The first 4 slides provide examples of short films for you to show your class, the weblink for each video is in the notes section. It is helpful to think about how each one is successful in delivering a message so that you begin to create a class success criteria. It is assumed that you would be using an iPad with moviemaker, or other similar app.

Think about… General: Who is the audience?
What is the message? – what facts do you want to talk about? What film type will you use? Technical: How many actors? What camera angles? How many props? You need to set some ground rules. As a teacher / class you need to decide on these. With regard film type you may want to make a news broadcast, advert or documentary style. If it’s your first go at making films then why not try using the trailer option on moviemaker. This gives children the framework for their creation.
7
Planning your film If you’re not using the trailer option of moviemaker, then you will need to plan your film. The following slides may be helpful.
8
Private Peaceful - Introduction
Shot types Private Peaceful - Introduction Children need to think through what type of camera angles they can use. Having the same camera angle throughout will make it boring – take a look at the films we watched earlier and see what camera angles you can spot.
9
Thinking through the storyboard of your film is really important
Thinking through the storyboard of your film is really important. This will help you think about the sequence of shots. This is a poor example to talk about. Notice that: Nothing much is happening The camera angle is the same in all shots.
10
This sequence is much improved and will guide the makers in sequence ad camera shot.
